Introduction

The Philippines' Typhoon Tino Relief

In early November 2025, Typhoon Tino struck the Philippines with devastating force, leaving a trail of destruction across Cebu, Palawan, and surrounding regions. The scale of the impact was overwhelming: more than 4.1 million people were affected, with 379,000 displaced, many forced to stay with relatives or in overcrowded evacuation centers. Entire communities were inundated — 155,400 houses damaged, over 20,500 completely destroyed, and dozens of barangays suffered from floods and landslides days later. Casualties continued to rise, with 232 deaths, 112 missing, and more than 500 injured reported nationwide.

Amid this crisis, Earth Company provided a US$5,000 disaster relief grant to Impact Hero 2016 Robin Lim and her organization Bumi Sehat, who mobilized immediately to respond in Cebu and Palawan. With their deep local networks, long-standing trust, and experience in emergency maternal and community care, Bumi Sehat launched a rapid response to meet families’ most urgent needs — providing food, essentials, temporary shelter materials, and critical support for mothers and children.

Ibu Robin Lim is a Filipino–American midwife, mother, grandmother, and founder of Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a nonprofit organization that provides free maternity care for pregnant women, mothers and their babies, plus healthcare for all those in need.

Born in the Philippines in 1956, Robin decided to become a midwife in 1991, when her sister and niece tragically died during childbirth. She qualified as a midwife in the United States and Indonesia, and founded the Bumi Sehat Foundation International in Bali, Indonesia. To date, she has birthed over 9,000 babies and is known by locals and international fans alike as “Ibu Robin” (Mother Robin). Bumi Sehat (which translates to “healthy mother earth”) operates clinics in Bali, Sumatra Island Aceh, Papua and the Philippines, as well as temporary clinics in disaster areas around the world such as Haiti and Nepal. Through the foundation, Robin trains and inspires more than 6,000 midwives and nurses per year, and over 300,000 people have benefitted from Bumi Sehat’s services to date.

"A Safe Haven for Society’s Most Vulnerable"
KEY RESULT

Providing Urgent Relief and Basic Essentials to Affected Families

With communities facing widespread displacement and massive losses of food, clothing, and shelter, Bumi Sehat focused on delivering immediate necessities to families in Cebu and Roxas. Their teams prepared and distributed hot meals, and organized “Basic Necessity Packets” containing rice, eggs, sweet potatoes, hygiene items, dry clothes, blankets, and bedding — a crucial lifeline for families who had lost everything to the floods. These packets helped stabilize households during the most chaotic days, ensuring that children, pregnant women, and vulnerable family members had access to nutrition, warmth, and basic comfort while evacuation centers remained full and local supply chains struggled to recover.

Strengthening Safety and Dignity Through Shelter, Health Support, and Local Mobilization

Beyond food and essentials, Bumi Sehat supported families with tarps for temporary shelter, giving households protection from continued rains while many waited for relocation or rebuilding. They also sourced and distributed medicines and vitamins for children and pregnant mothers — a lifesaving intervention as health risks surged amidst flooding, contamination, and overcrowding. Local volunteers in Cebu and Palawan mobilized quickly, supported with fuel and logistical resources to reach hard-hit areas that remained underwater or isolated.
