Supporting Rohingya Children in Cox’s Bazar
For thousands of Rohingya children growing up in the congested refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, childhood is overshadowed by uncertainty. With limited schooling, almost no safe spaces, and the constant threat of exploitation, many children face the heartbreaking risk of being pulled into child prostitution, trafficking, or other dangerous activities. Despite these challenges, local Rohingya leaders have long been working to protect their youth — ensuring they grow up not only surviving, but learning, dreaming, and preparing for a peaceful future.
To support these efforts, Earth Company partnered with the Burmese Rohingya Association in Japan (BRC) to launch a 24-hour emergency fundraising campaign on June 2015, raising 510,000 JPY (US$3,490) — enough to keep their community-run school operating for another six months. This school, built by the Rohingya community themselves, has become a lifeline for 400 children, offering education, stability, and a safe haven amid one of the world’s largest refugee settlements.
With this support, seven Rohingya teachers are now able to continue their work, providing basic education in national language, English, and math, along with daily structure and emotional grounding that helps children stay out of harm’s way.
Six months of safe, continuous education for 400 children
The funds fully covered the school’s operational costs for half a year — including stipends for 7 community teachers and school supplies such as books and pencils. This ensured access to basic education (national language, English, and math) for 400 Rohingya children, allowing them to build foundational skills, confidence, and a sense of normalcy in an otherwise unstable environment.
Protecting children while preparing them for a peaceful future
By keeping children engaged in daily schooling, the program significantly reduced their vulnerability to crime, exploitation, and unsafe labor within the camps. Beyond protection, the school nurtures children’s belief that they can one day return to Myanmar as educated, empowered citizens — contributing to peace in their homeland. The project also strengthened BRC’s ongoing community-led initiatives, reinforcing the resilience and leadership of the Rohingya people themselves.
