Introduction

Transforming 360 Tons of Waste into Life-Saving Soap for 800,000 Refugees

Every year, thousands of hotels across the world discard perfectly usable soap, while millions of people in refugee camps struggle without access to basic hygiene. Among those most affected are the Rohingya, a stateless Muslim minority group. Forced to flee their homeland of Myanmar, around one million Rohingya now live in overcrowded refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — one of the largest refugee settlements in the world. In these camps, poor sanitation and limited access to soap have made preventable diseases a major threat. Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children under five, yet hygiene kits remain scarce.

In response, partnered with Earth Company, Impact Hero 2022 Samir Lakhani and his organization Eco-Soap Bank launched an international crowdfunding campaign in September 2024. For the first time, Earth Company raised funds not only within Japan but globally — mobilizing US$68,314 from 206 supporters across 11 countries. These funds enabled the installation of an advanced soap-making machine at Eco-Soap Bank’s factory in Cambodia, drastically increasing production capacity and expanding impact across Asia and Africa.

In a rural Cambodian village, Samir was shocked to see a mother bathe her baby with laundry detergent.

The world disposes of up to 250 million pieces of soap every year. Yet in developing countries like Cambodia, a shortage of basic hygiene products, like bar soap, is the primary cause of infant mortality rates due to preventable diseases like diarrhea.

Learning of this issue, Samir founded Eco-Soap Bank to save lives by enhancing hygiene, protecting the environment from soap waste pollution, and improving the local economy.

PROJECT IMPACT

Providing Accessibility to Hygiene as a Basic Human Right

Deliver 3.6 Million Bars of Soap

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UNHCR, there are at least one million refugees that needs access to basic hygiene products, such as soap. Together with Samir and Eco-Soap Bank, the plan is to produce 3.6 million bars or recycled soap to these refugee camps in Bangladesh and Tanzania.

Reducing Soap Waste-to-Landfill

Using the funds raised, Eco-Soap Bank is able to maximize their capacity and recycle a further 360,000+ kilograms of soap waste, preventing it from entering landfills and polluting the environment. With that, they will also be able to produce 12,000,000± kilograms of recycled soap every year! enabling them
