Introduction

Operations for Bumi Sehat Palawan Clinic

In much of the developing world, maternal mortality rates remain very high. Too many mothers lose their lives due to complications stemming from poverty, disasters, famine and malnourishment. Bumi Sehat tackles these issues head on, providing free maternity care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The clinic works closely with the community, taking into account its needs and providing not only obstetrics, but also primary care, yoga for the elderly, training for new midwives, scholarships, education for young people and functions as a safe haven for all.

The Bumi Sehat clinic in Palawan, Philippines, named Bahai Arugaan Ni Maria (BAM), was officially opened in 2022. Through the loving support from our supporters, Earth Company provided US$4,400 for the operations of the clinic in 2024.

Ibu Robin Lim is a Filipino–American midwife, mother, grandmother, and founder of Yayasan Bumi Sehat, a nonprofit organization that provides free maternity care for pregnant women, mothers and their babies, plus healthcare for all those in need.

Born in the Philippines in 1956, Robin decided to become a midwife in 1991, when her sister and niece tragically died during childbirth. She qualified as a midwife in the United States and Indonesia, and founded the Bumi Sehat Foundation International in Bali, Indonesia. To date, she has birthed over 9,000 babies and is known by locals and international fans alike as “Ibu Robin” (Mother Robin). Bumi Sehat (which translates to “healthy mother earth”) operates clinics in Bali, Sumatra Island Aceh, Papua and the Philippines, as well as temporary clinics in disaster areas around the world such as Haiti and Nepal. Through the foundation, Robin trains and inspires more than 6,000 midwives and nurses per year, and over 300,000 people have benefitted from Bumi Sehat’s services to date.

THE MISSION
"A Safe Haven for Society’s Most Vulnerable"
KEY RESULT

Living Life for Love: If Not for Love, What Else Would You Live For?

Free Healthcare 24/7, 365 Days a Year

Although its primary mission is to provide maternity services to all marginalized, displaced or low-income peoples, regardless of their background or condition, Bumi Sehat never turns its back when a person walks in to seek help whatever their problem may be. While serving all those in need, Bumi Sehat’s role in the community has evolved to become one of a true community center providing a wide range of services; from medical care and education to environmental and community development programs.

World Peace Starts with Saving One Life

While the Philippines has experienced significant economic growth in recent years, Palawan's economic development lags, with 25.3% of its population living below the poverty line (less than $1.90 per day), surpassing the national average of 22.4%. Palawan has the fourth-highest maternal mortality rate and one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the Philippines. Furthermore, Palawan faces a serious issue of child malnutrition, with the height of a 12-year-old being almost the same as that of a 6-year-old.

Thus, BAM’s services were highly sought after in Palawan, assisting births and delivering 282 babies in 2024. The 2.3-hectare facility includes rooms for midwives and mothers to stay before and after childbirth, a restaurant, and an organic farm that grows vegetables for the cafeteria. The clinic also offers dental and eye check-ups, and works with local communities and schools on nutrition improvement programs. All of which are done, absolutely free of charge.
