Study Tours for Professionals

It’s widely recognized that the future of our planet and of humankind is at great risk, and that immediate and substantial action is required to address the social and environmental challenges around us.

Our current way of life is just not sustainable. In a world of limited resources, we in the developed world are living in a way that one planet cannot sustain. We’d need approximately 3 earths to support a world in which everyone lived to the same standard as the Japanese average. Were the whole world to live like the American average, we’d need 5!

In 2015, the world’s leaders finally recognized the risks and costs of inaction against climate change. At the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21), leaders adopted the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal.

In business too, some of the world’s wealthiest individuals have committed to dedicating the majority of their wealth to philanthropy by signing up to the Giving Pledge. To date, the pledge has over 150 signatories, including Bill and Melinda Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, and Warren Buffett.

Our study tours take you on a journey, exploring how this global change in awareness is manifesting itself on the ground. In Ubud, Bali’s hub of social innovation, we take you to explore a world of social business, meeting professionals who are living and breathing the move towards sustainability.

Toyo x Udayana University:Diversity Voyage in Bali

Experiencing the social innovation combating the real poverty and issues hidden behind the resorts and beaches

In partnership with a Japanese organization called GiFT, Earth Company delivered an interactive global citizens educational program in which Japanese students from Toyo University and Indonesian students from Udayana University came together to propose solutions to social challenges in Bali.

The students engaged in a dialogue with Earth Company’s Impact Hero Robin Lim and her staff at Bumi Sehat Clinic, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the local communities. Whilst learning about, experiencing and examining these social challenges, the students spent the week coming up with innovative new solutions and ideas to address them.

Proposing solutions to real problems

Behind the well known beauty of Bali lies a harsh reality of poverty, malnutrition and high maternal and infant mortality rates. This program challenges students to understand the problems faced by the Bumi Sehat Clinic, run by Robin Lim (CNN Hero of the Year 2011), and propose solutions to address them.

Finding unity in diversity

The Japanese participants were given the opportunity to work alongside 12 Indonesian students from a local university. Though their experiences, backgrounds and native language differed, they were able recognize the value in working together to find ways to  improve the lives from vulnerable communities.
