UBUD, BALI

DISCOVER THE POSSIBLE

Bali is renowned for being an idyllic island getaway – a surfer’s paradise,
but more recently it is Ubud, at the heart of the island, that is gaining international attention as a hub of social innovation.

From the world-famous Green School
to award-winning social enterprises such as Kopernik and Bumi Sehat,
Bali attracts and nurtures social entrepreneurs from the around the world.

Though they have often found success within their former “mainstream” careers,
these social entrepreneurs have come to question the current system
and are leading the way in seeking a better, more sustainable future.

We give you the chance to examine how Bali became such a hub for innovation,
and to learn directly from these inspiring social entrepreneurs and businesses,
discovering new ideas that will help you to re-examine the way we live and work
and contemplate the future of social entrepreneurship.

“This tour really made me realise that I am personally responsible for the creation of value, not just repackaging something that is already in existence”

“Bali, and Ubud specifically, seems to be a real center for social enterprise. Ubud is the hub of an ecosystem for social enterprise. And on top of that, it’s a fantastically beautiful place. Where else in the world can you be working on your laptop overlooking paddy fields? To me, that’s magical.”

Kaai-Akimoto

Kaai Akimoto

“This was an opportunity for me not only to see these great examples of social innovation, but to see the environment and people behind it, how these people lead their lives, and also to reflect on my own choices. I sense that the people I’ve met and the things I’ve learnt through this tour are going to propel me at high speed into my future.”

YOU WILL EXPERIENCE

Green School

“Imagine this, a school without walls, a campus which ignites the senses and the natural curiosity of children, a place where innovation, creativity and learning flourish, a community, which has come together from all corners of the globe to share new experiences, a place of joy.” Green School was founded to take an alternative approach to learning, and its focus on sustainability is manifested in its physical appearance – beautiful, towering bamboo structures.

Kopernik

Toshi Nakamura and Ewa Wojkowska founded Kopernik in 2010 after seeing that life-changing and affordable technologies existed, but they weren’t reaching the people who lived in the most remote and hard to reach parts of the world – the last mile. Working in 26 countries, Kopernik has been bridging the technology gap ever since. In 2016, Kopernik was awarded the Zayed Future Energy Prize.

Bumi Sehat Foundation International

Bumi Sehat is the beating heart of the local community. Robin Lim, who received the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year award in recognition of the impact of her work and was Earth Company Impact Hero 2016, leads Bumi Sehat, a growing network of clinics that provides free obstetrics healthcare across Indonesia, the Philippines and disaster zones around the world to expectant mothers and babies who would otherwise be unable to find care, whether through poverty or disaster.

Hubud-earth-company-tour
Hubud [Hub-in-Ubud]

A coworking space, home to digital nomads from around the world. Bali is already home to 10 coworking spaces, but Hubud is probably the most popular. Social entrepreneurs and digital nomads from all backgrounds and walks of life gather here and make up a community where they can work as they wish, sharing ideas and collaborating through regular events and seminars, and unconstrained by traditional working practices. Built from bamboo and surrounded by rice fields, the setting is pretty idyllic too.

Free Time

Whether it’s tourism, shopping or yoga, after a busy few days, this is your time to spend as you wish. You may feel like going for a long walk and taking in your beautiful surroundings, or going to visit another social business or meet up with another social entrepreneur you haven’t yet had the chance to. And there’s always a good Balinese massage if you’re feeling tired!
